Awards Season began with a bang last night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Hundreds of talented stars walked the red carpet dressed to the nines. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler played it quite safe this year but none the less where incredibly funny, as were the presenters and winners. It is lovely to watch performers being themselves and getting caught up in the moment.
It was a night of well earned awards, there were only a few small surprises the main one being Andy Samberg winning Best Actor in a TV Series - Comedy for Brooklyn Nine Nine which also took the Best TV Series Comedy over The Big Bang Theory and Modern Family among other regular favorites.Breaking Bad won best TV Series Drama and Bryan Cranston won Best actor in a TV Drama; a lovely final goodbye to the show.
Cate Blanchett beat out Sandra Bullock in what must have been an extremely close contest for Best Actress - Drama and it was completely deserved; her role in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine was incredible. Speaking of Woody Allen, in one of the more touching moments of the night, Diane Keaton took to the stage and accepted the Cecil B. DeMille award for her friend of 45 years.
Jennifer Lawrence was in for a surprise, the night had barely begun and she was summoned to the stage to accept the award of Best Supporting Actress for American Hustle which was the big winner of the night, receiving the Best Picture (musical or comedy) and Best Actress in a musical or comedy for Amy Adams. No such luck for the boys, I was personally disappointed to see Bradley Cooper miss out on the Best Supporting Actor to Jared Leto for Dallas Buyers Club, though that is not to say that Leto was not great in the part. Christian Bale also missed out but I was thrilled to see my favorite actor Leonardo Dicaprio win Best Actor in a musical or Comedy for The Wolf of Wall Street which is released in the UK on Friday.
Alfonso Cuaron won Best Director for Gravity in a very tough category, there were so many great talents that it must have been a small margin between any one of them. Gravity could not succeed completely as it fell to Steve McQueen to accept the award for Best Film - Drama for 12 Years a Slave which surprisingly only won the one award. Chiwetel Ejiofor who I thought would be the front-runner for Best Actor - Drama missed out to Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club, though looking at it logically McConaughey went through a huge physical change to take on the part as well as being superb so he might have had the edge over some of the other nominees.
On the whole it was a great night, everybody who won completely deserved their award and those who were nominated were in most cases just as good as the winners. As I have said before it is a ridiculously strong year for films and performances. But this isn't a bad thing, all the better for us as an audience we get to see classics in the making.
Brilliant start to awards season can't wait to see more, lets see if last nights winners can pull in some more trophy's for their collection or whether someone else will get the chance to get up on that stage. The SAG awards are on next Saturday 18th, stay tuned for my nominees list earlier in the day.
