Awards Season - The Golden Globe Nominations

Well it’s here again, kicking off with the People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday 8th of January and the Golden Globes tonight (Sunday 12th) Awards Season has officially begun!

This is the first in my Awards coverage feature, I will have an article on the award nominations (before the show obviously) and the awards shows themselves announcing the winners so tune in.

This is my absolute favourite time of the year, I love awards season for many reasons. One being that from around November to February the most amazing movies are released, and two I love to see the stars, walking the carpet, accepting awards (most completely deserved) and basically just being themselves and enjoying the moment; which is something we don’t get to see very often.

This year is an incredible year for movies, I know everyone says that every year but normally there are a few greats and one stand out that applies to the films, performances, direction and most other categories. Meaning that one movie or person usually sweeps the board and everyone knows that they are a shoo-in to win. However this year, I think it will be much harder for that decision to be made, it is almost impossible to say who will win; each category is so strong I would definitely not like to bet money on it.

Every year seems to follow the same pattern those that win at the early awards show; the Golden Globes, tends to strike gold at almost every other main ceremony; the SAG’s (Screen Actors Guild Awards) the BAFTA’s (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) finally ending with the most prestigious and coveted of Awards; The Academy Awards (or Oscars as they have become widely known).
In most cases this year the same films and performances have been nominated for most awards with the odd exception and snub here and there. The main categories for the Golden Globe nominations are as follows;

Best Actress, Comedy or Musical
Amy Adams - American Hustle
Julie Delpy - Before Midnight
Greta Gerwig - Frances Ha
Julia Louise-Dreyfus - Enough Said
Meryl Streep - August: Osage County

Her
Inside Llewyn Davis
Nebraska
The Wolf of Wall Street

Best Director
Alfonso Cuaron - Gravity
Paul Greengrass - Captain Phillips
Steve McQueen - 12 Years a Slave
Alexander Payne - Nebraska
David O. Russell - American Hustle

As you can see there is an immense load of talent here, how on earth do you pick a winner from some of these lists? A film that surprisingly has been completely snubbed is Lee Daniel’s The Butler, I think many will have been surprised not see that on the list after such amazing performances from Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey. I have a feeling Gravity will do very well this year, as will 12 Years a Slave and possibly American Hustle.

What I love about The Golden Globes is that unlike the Academy Awards they split the films into Drama and Comedy or Musical, this allows for a bigger selection of performances and films to be rewarded for their great achievement. It means that the likes of The Wolf of Wall Street has a chance to shine as well as intense Dramas like 12 Years a Slave and Captain Phillips.

I can’t wait to find out who will win, to see the full list of nominations, which also includes those in the Television industry, click on the link below.

The SAG awards take place on Sunday 18th of January, The BAFTA's on Sunday 16th February and the Academy Awards on Sunday March 2nd. I will be covering all of them before and after so save the dates  - check out the blog and watch the awards shows.

Please share this and don’t forget to leave me a comment with your guesses on who will take home an award.
